Bill Bryson: The secret life of your home →
Ever wondered why forks have four prongs? Or why we choose salt and pepper over other spices? For his new book, Bill Bryson took a trip around his own house to find out why we live the way we do Pretty much every paragraph in this article is a gem. I couldn’t find any one part to quote that I particularly liked more than the others, so just take my word for it and read the whole thing.

The Incredible San Fancisco Artists’ Soapbox Derby, 1975. I posted this elsewhere before, but it is worth re-posting here. It’s great for many reasons, but among them is that I am incredibly attracted to the soft-spoken way that the artists talk about their work. I don’t think I encounter very many people who speak so gently. It must be the hippiness. (Via kottke)

The lost languages, found in New York
From the New York Times: These are not just some of the languages that make New York the most linguistically diverse city in the world. They are part of a remarkable trove of endangered tongues that have taken root in New York — languages born in every corner of the globe and now more commonly heard in various corners of New York than anywhere else. While there is no precise count, some experts...

First, I saw the photos of Leon de Korte’s graduation project and was really intrigued. Then, I saw this video and was floored. There’s something so nice about the process starting from sketches before ending up where it is. The outcome of the flat poster almost doesn’t do the process justice.  Have a good weekend, everyone!
