Ratatouille

My intentions of seeing the movie in theatres didn’t hold up to action, but I finally watched it over the weekend on DVD Blu-Ray. The movie is very well done, and I have a rat bias, which means I ended up liking the story a whole lot. Still, I was especially wowed by several things.

Remy’s sense of taste—When he bit into the cheese and strawberry, the background blackened, and filled with colors, shapes, and movement. It was so synesthetic! I immediately thought of The Man Who Tasted Shapes, and wondered if synesthesia was a way for Remy to cook by feel/intuition. (Pixar probably didn’t intend for the synesthesia reference, but nonetheless it really deepened the story for me.)

Your Friend, the Rat—A common reaction I get from people who hear about Morsel is disbelief or shock. Rats aren’t really thought of as a pet, so I was so glad to see a short on the disc, called Your Friend, the Rat, that dispels some of the myths surrounding rats. The part about the flea was great.
