The Font War: Ikea Fans Fume over Verdana

Time article here.

I did get the catalogue a week or so ago, and my initial reactions were, “Did the font get corrupted at the printers?” and “Maybe it was too cumbersome for all the designers to activate a non-system font?”

Personally, I never ever used Verdana merely because I don’t find it nice looking. The only times I’ve ever used it I made sure it was really small. The designer was Matthew Carter, who also designed Bell and Georgia. Don’t quote me on this because I’m recalling purely from memory, but it was designed completely on the screen for improved screen legibility. So, I wonder what Matthew Carter thinks of his screen font being used for the most widely distributed book ever.
